DStv Explora vs HD Decoder

An honest comparison to help you choose the right decoder for your needs and budget.

Updated January 2026 by DSTV Installer Centurion

Choosing between the DStv Explora Ultra and a standard HD decoder is one of the most common questions we get from Centurion homeowners. Both give you access to DStv’s full channel lineup in HD, but they differ significantly in features, price, and installation requirements. Here’s an honest comparison to help you decide.

The DStv HD Decoder: Simple and Affordable

The HD single-view decoder is DStv’s entry-level option. It does one thing well: it lets you watch DStv channels in HD quality on a single TV. There’s no recording function, no rewind or pause capability, and no streaming apps. You tune to a channel and watch it live — that’s it.

The advantages of the HD decoder are its low purchase price (significantly cheaper than the Explora) and slightly simpler installation requirements. It works with either a single LNB or a Smart LNB, and needs only one coaxial cable connection.

Best for: Single-person households, secondary TVs (like a kitchen or guest room), rental properties where you want basic DStv without a big investment, or anyone on a tight budget who just wants to watch live TV.

The DStv Explora Ultra: Full-Featured Entertainment Hub

The Explora Ultra is Multichoice’s flagship decoder and it’s packed with features. Built-in WiFi means no need for an ethernet cable. You get access to Netflix, Showmax, Disney+, and other streaming apps right on your DStv decoder — no need for a separate streaming device. The recording feature lets you schedule recordings, pause and rewind live TV, and store up to 220 hours of content. And if you have a compatible TV, you can enjoy 4K Ultra HD picture quality and Dolby Atmos surround sound.

The Explora requires a Smart LNB (not an older single or twin LNB), which means upgrading your LNB if your installation is more than a few years old. It also benefits from a solid WiFi signal where the decoder is located, so consider this if your router is far from your TV.

Best for: Families who want to record shows and watch later, anyone who uses streaming services, homes where you want to set up Extra View (the Explora must be the primary decoder in Triple View), and anyone who wants the best DStv experience available.

Cost Comparison

The HD decoder retails for roughly R600-R800. The Explora Ultra retails for around R3,000-R3,500. Installation costs are similar, though the Explora installation may be slightly higher if your LNB needs upgrading. See our full pricing guide for installation costs.

However, consider the long-term value: if you’re currently paying for a separate Netflix subscription (R159-R299/month) and could use the Explora’s built-in access instead of a separate streaming device, the Explora effectively consolidates your entertainment setup.

Our Recommendation

For most Centurion households, the Explora Ultra is worth the extra investment. The recording function alone — being able to pause live TV when the phone rings, or record the rugby when you’re not home — is something people wonder how they ever lived without once they have it. Add in the streaming integration and it becomes the centre of your home entertainment.

That said, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with the HD decoder for the right use case. We install plenty of them and they’re a solid, reliable product. We’ll always give you honest advice based on your actual needs rather than pushing the more expensive option.
